Time Magazine reports in its December 7, 2009 issue that from 2003-2006, the Centers for Disease Control sent out two surveys aksing a total of 2.4 million respondents about their overall mood, particularly how many days in the preceding month their mental health was not good. "Researchers were looking for FMDs - frequent mental distress - defined as 14 or more days out of a month.
