Democrat Sam Gaskins, of Hopkinsville, is running for the seat left open by the retirement of Rep. Ed Whitfield.
Gaskins announced his candidacy December 1st on the steps of the Pennyroyal Arts Council building.
The candidate is a 38 year old veteran of both the Marines and the US Army.
