People came from miles around to hear a Democratic candidate for president. In the middle of the day. During a work week. The voters were here.
Where were the Democratic candidates for statewide office?
Where was Steve Beshear?
Where was Dr. Dan Mongiardo?
Where was Jack Conway?
Where was Crit Luallen?
Where was Todd Hollenbach?
Where was Bruce Henderson?
Where was Jonathan Miller?
Yes, they came to Fancy Farm. Yes. They came to St. John's Picnic.
This event was unique. The West Kentuckians who came to Columbus are not politicians or political junkies, just people looking for hope. They came for answers on how their lives can be made better. They know that America is broken. Edwards shared a plan to fix it.
This was not a fundraiser for Edwards. No money was taken up. No literature was distributed. No political theater, just a town hall meeting to answer questions confronting rural America. He made it quite clear that all were welcome to be part of the dialogue. That included Democrats, independents and wavering Republicans. Not all the questions were friendly.
The stage for the event overlooking the Mississippi River was an excellent opportunity for Kentucky Democratic leaders to mingle with voters they will never see at Fancy Farm or St. John's Picnic.
Yes, it IS a long from Frankfort - almost three hundred miles. And there was only ten days notice of Edwards' appearance. But somehow, almost two thousand people found their way to Columbus.
If West Kentucky feels it is forgotten, maybe, just maybe, we aren't paranoid.
