What Is It That Drives Us?

What is it that drives us?

I do not understand

What carnal need possesses man

To control another man?

What makes us slaves

To our lower nature

Why can’t we rise above?

Our words are filled with honest lies

While our hearts are lacking love

It seems to me the more I watch

The less I want to see

The sadness of my vision

Causes tears to pour down my cheeks

I see my brother hurt my brother

And take pleasure in his pain

And justify his evil deeds

By doing them in God’s name.

Each fight that’s fought is always “right”.

When asking either side

And no matter who’s victorious

We all lose by and by.

For in the end, when all is done.

And bones lie in their graves

And young people have died for old men’s wars

And the smoke turns to nothing more than the slightest haze.

No one will know Victory’s glow

Without sorrow, loss and pain.

But fewer people than you think

Will feel the well earned shame.
