Governor Stumps for Lawrence at Paducah Fundraiser

Governor Beshear put in a lot of good words at a fundraiser for Mike Lawrence on Wednesday evening. Speaking by the pool at Mark and Sue Bryant’s graceful Paducah home, the Governor told the crowd that he wanted legislators who would work with him. Mike Lawrence would stand up for West Kentucky, he said.

The Governor in West Kentucky to attend the Labor Management Conference at Kentucky Lake has been in the region for multiple appearances since his election, fulfilling a campaign promise made at the gubernatorial debate in Paducah that he would not forget his home region if elected governor.

Candidate Carroll Hubbard also received praise from the Governor. Beshear told the crowd that Hubbard's election will cut into Senate President David Williams' power base. Referring to the lock that Williams has on the Republicans in the Senate. He quoted Hubbard's quip that when Williams takes a sleeping pill, 22 state senators take a nap.

House Speaker Jody Richards made a surprise appearance. He said that he would be Speaker in January. He vowed to put Lawrence on committees that would help his district. Richards also said that the House needed a full time legislator, giving examples of how legislators help their constituents year round.

Richards’ remarks were in reaction to the incumbent representative Steven Rudy’s gibes about full time legislators made at the St. Johns Picnic a few days before. Richards served as moderator of that event.

Richards also announced that Lawrence would be getting help from the House Democratic Caucus. “A love offering”, Richards joked.

Lawrence, McCracken County Court Clerk for sixteen years, seemed stunned by the turn out of well wishers from around the First District. He told supporters that he wanted to make a difference in the economy and bring good paying jobs to the region.
