State Leaders and Kentucky National Guard to Sign Military Covenant

WHAT:  Signing of the Kentucky National Guard Family and Community Covenant

WHERE: Capitol Rotunda, Frankfort, Ky.
 
Frankfort, Ky. -- Lieutenant Governor Daniel Mongiardo will join Adjutant General Edward W. Tonini and other state officials in signing the first Kentucky National Guard Military Family and Community Covenant at 10 a.m. EDT on Thursday, September 18 in the Capitol Building rotunda.
 
 The covenant—which outlines the commitment between the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the state's military community—aims to provide better services to assist Citizen-Soldiers, veterans and their families, support services to wounded warriors and to help Soldiers returning from deployments.
 
Included among the items in the covenant are:
-  Continued veterans preference in state hiring
-  Continued funding of Kentucky National Guard Tuition Assistance Program
-  Continued funding for Kentucky Military Family Assistance Trust Fund
-  Sustaining and improving state-based service for all servicemembers
-  Continued support of Kentucky's Employer Support of Guard and Reserves efforts
-  Coordinating servicemembers re-integration into home, community and work
-  Providing active participants and resources to work groups and training programs
-  Creating new initiatives and partnerships to support service members and their families
-  Supporting legislation to improve transition services to servicemembers and families
 
To date, the Kentucky National Guard has mobilized more than 10,000 Soldiers and Airmen in support of the Global War on Terror, with 780 troops deployed overseas at this time.   
 
The Kentucky Guard has also responded in full force in support of Hurricanes Katrina, Gustav and Ike, in addition to the homeland security mission along the Arizona-Mexican Border and natural disaster relief missions within the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
