MoveOn.org Rally in Paducah: Photos and Poetry

Local Residents to Rep. Ed Whitfield:
Support Obama’s Economic Recovery Plan

MoveOn.org Members Deliver Petitions Demanding
Quick and Bold Action to Create New Jobs

On Wednesday, a small group of MoveOn.org members rallied in Paducah outside Rep. Whitfield's office.  There were signs, petitions, smiling faces on a bitterly cold day. Our thanks to Ann Perkins for sharing her photos.

Even though the turn out was small, Jeanie Embry, the organizer of the event is undeterred. She reported the day after the Rally that she had been contacted by Whitfield's office for a face to face with the Congressman to discuss the economicy recovery plan.

Delivering the petitions is one step in what will be an ongoing process for the progressive group. Leslie McColgin of Graves County who braved the cold to stand outside her congressman's office, said,  "All of our eyes are on Congress now to see if they will support we the American people and release the TARP funds and support the economic recovery program. "

"President-elect Obama's economic recovery plan invests in green jobs, health care, and clean energy which is what the economy needs and what most Americans want for long-term stability.   MoveOn members have been working on these issues for years, and now that the White House isn't ruled by Big Oil and other special interests, we can get to work on rebuilding our country. " said Jeanie Embry, MoveOn member from Paducah.

One demonstrator put her thoughts in verse.

"Progressive Poetry", from Ann Perkins of Calloway County:

We gave it our best, took a stand, had our say,
Citizens honked and waved in support.
But we did not have the ear of Ed Whitfield that day,
So we quietly left our report.

It seems he can't be bothered by those of us in need,
Though the woes of his constituents are many.
Championing the free market and deregulation is his avowed creed!
Concerning social policy, we must pinch every penny!

Ed says, Abandoning free market principles will hurt us all greatly!
Where will the bailouts end?
I have to ask Ed, have you seen the news lately?
The free market has nearly doomed us, my friend.

Economists say Obama's plan may cure this disease,
The danger lies in thinking too small.
All we wanted to ask was will you support him please?
For in doing so you may help us all.

We stood strong in the cold, each doing their part,
Hope in Democracy revived anew!
But I doubt the weather matched the cold in Ed's heart,
His principles crooked and askew.

For no matter how reasonable green technology is,
No matter the jobs it may one day provide,
Our goal is not the same as his, on HIS wealth depends,
That Big Oil must always abide.
