(Clinton, KY) - Many of us attending Dr. Brian Clardy's Black History Month program at Green Valley Missionary Baptist Church on February 20^th thought we knew history. It turned out that we knew some correct history but much that was not. Dr. Clardy knows a whole lot more. Fortunately for the thirty or so who attended, he was willing to supplement our lack of information.

ALL KENTUCKY DEMOCRATIC MEETINGS ARE OFF UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

The Fulton County Democratic Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 12th at Citizens Bank(Side entry), in the City of Hickman. Those who want to support the Committee can send donations to 6989 State Route 125, Hickman, Ky. 42050, Checks payable to Fulton County Democratic Committee.

The Hickman County Democratic Precinct Convention is set for Sat. March 21st, 10 a.m. at Mary Potter's Law Office Conference Room, 113 N. Washington St. in Clinton.

At this writing, the Hickman County Democratic Convention is set for Saturday April 18th, 10 AM also at the Potter law office conference room.

We will post other county meetings as they are sent to us.

The March 7^th meeting of the Jackson Purchase Historical Society will feature Christopher L. Thornock, an Archaeologist and the Heritage Program Manager at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, speaking on "African-American Lives and Landscapes on the Lower Tennessee River." The meeting will be held at the Hotel Metropolitan, 724 Oscar Cross Ave., Paducah beginning at 10:30 am. A brief business meeting will precede the talk. The program is free and open to all.

Admiral William McRaven brought his life story to Murray State University for the first in the re-instituted Presidential Lecture Series. For over an hour, he held an audience of over 800 students, teachers and graduates enthralled.

Paducah Tilghman senior Samuel Lambert has been named a semifinalist in the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program. He is among 120 semifinalists nationwide in the scholarship program based on the attributes of leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship demonstrated at school, at the workplace, and within the community. The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program is funded by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, with up to 20 finalists receiving a total award of $40,000 on the basis of continued enrollment at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States.

Mayor Linda Gorton, City of Lexington and UK President Eli Capilouto, made the case in an editorial in the Lexington Herald Leader on February 6, 2020 that more state money and federal money will make their city and their university a high tech center..

The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) has granted Knott County Water and Sewer District a rate adjustment that will increase water service rates by 45 percent immediately and another 15 percent a year from now...

For a typical residential customer using 3,500 gallons per month, the first phase of the rate change will increase the monthly bill by $12.19, from $26.70 to $38.89. The second increase a year from now will add another $5.84 to the monthly bill, bringing it to $44.73.

(Jan. 13, 2020) - Gov. Andy Beshear and Department for Local Government (DLG) Commissioner Dennis Keene today announced grants to four western Kentucky communities.

...The purpose of Indiana's red flag law is to prevent someone who is considered to be a safety threat from buying or possessing firearms until their mental state can be assessed or the issue otherwise resolved. Three separate reviews must be met before that can happen, said Mull: law enforcement must find probable cause that the person is a safety threat, a prosecutor must file an action in court, and a judge has to find "clear and convincing evidence" that an order is needed...

A similar law proposed for Kentucky died during the 2019 session of the General Assembly.

So much for any commonsense proposal that comes close to touching on the inalienable rights of gun owners, sellers and manufacturers.

PADUCAH, KY (01/06/2020) West Kentucky Community and Technical College's Paducah School of Art and Design opens its exhibition Paducah, Our Legacy, Our Future - Paintings by Joan Dance, with a reception January 16, 2020.

Our Legacy, Our Future showcases the paintings, past and present, of Paducah native and noted African-American folk artist Joan Dance. The reception, which is free and open to the public, will be hosted in the Bill Ford Gallery from 5-6:30 p.m. The gallery is located in Paducah School of Art and Design's (PSAD) 2D and Graphic Design Building at 905 Harrison Street.

Thanks to the Kentucky General Assembly's bipartisan action in 2014, Kentucky has a "no cup of coffee" rule that prevents individual legislators from receiving food and beverages and other gifts from lobbyists and their employers...

The ethics law, enacted as a response to the BOPTROT scandal (bless their hearts) in the early 1990's, was strengthened by the General Assembly in 2014.

January 3, 2020. The Kentucky Council of Churches is hosting Prayer in Action Days at the State Capitol each Tuesday during this year's General Assembly to pray for government officials and act on behalf of Kentucky's most vulnerable citizens. Everyone in America now knows that Trump groupie Governor Matt Bevin lost Tuesday's election to former governor's son and now Governor-Elect Andy Beshear. Everyone, that is, except Governor Matt Bevin.

Despite being the least popular governor in America, Bevin came within 5000 + votes of keeping his seat. Rural areas in the eastern and western ends of the state voted strongly for the incumbent.

The media and legal storms stirring around President Trump are impacting the economic future of West Kentucky.

Recently Rep. James Comer, KY R-Tompkinsville 1^st Congressional District spoke to various Rotary and civic clubs in the Jackson Purchase Counties of far Western Kentucky. His main topic for these gatherings was about the current trade war with China. He descried it as "a battle that America must participate in."

"I don't like participating in it," he said. "If you ask me, if I support or oppose these tariffs, my answer is that I oppose them."...

There are three political issue driven parties in West Kentucky. One is the Democratic Party, mirrored by the Republican Party. Both of these institutions have been in play for about 50 years of tradition and issues. Each has established core beliefs on selected issues comfortable to a "white male voter" power base. A third group is just now taking shape. They are the independent/climate change/Trump resistance folks who are merging into a strong base outside the more traditional Kentucky political parties...
